Hi Becky — what an adventure! We can’t wait to hear all about it! :)

I echo Melissa’s thoughts, and also would add that a roll of washi tape was THE BEST road trip “toy” ever when we drove our 3-year-old 15 hours to visit grandma. ;) She made balls and letters and patterns and art, and each roll was inexpensive / didn’t take up a lot of space. I still carry it in the diaper bag for plane rides!

Enjoy!!! What wonderful memories you’ll all keep. :)

Great thought, Becky!!!!!!!!!! We have friends that make scrap paper chains for weeks leading up to birthdays. On the morning of the birthday, they hang them from the ceiling for pretty mobiles. :)

For us, it helps to know our “why.” We’ve discussed our clear reasons as a couple, and from there, we like to allow extended family a voice, but not necessarily a vote. In other words, we’re always open to discussing our reasoning in a gentle, firm and confident manner. There are a myriad of “whys” it works for us – flexibility and freedom, travel schedules, new ways to challenge young minds with opportunities that wouldn’t necessarily be available within the 4 walls of a classroom. And when the concept of socialization inevitably comes up, I always like to quote the ironic reminder of every public school teacher I’d ever had: “You’re not here to socialize!”

    ;)

    Hi Melissa:

Oh goodness, -40?! Bless you! Until you can try out the penny walk, these are a few of our favorite ways to teach Left and Right at home!:

-Hokey Pokey, believe it or not. ;)
-We Sharpie’d “L” on the sole of a left shoe and “R” on the sole of a right. Over time, this one stuck like glue!
-During the day, offer simple directives like, “Can you move your glass to the right side of the pile of books so it doesn’t spill?” or “I’m going to put your book on the left nightstand here.”
-Simple obstacle courses are one of our favorite ways to get exercise while also teaching L+R, i.e. “Jump on the left side of the pillow 4 times, then spin around right 5 times, then loop through to the left side of the kitchen table!,” etc.

Hope this helps warm up your homes and hearts over there! Stay safe! :)

    Hi Chiqui!

What’s his personality like? For our (very strong-willed and independent) daughter, we had to remove ourselves from the process entirely. She didn’t want help on the big toilet, didn’t want help washing her hands, didn’t want help being prompted or reminded when to go. So one day, a friend brought over her mini-version potty and I put it in our bathroom, saying “This is yours. You’re totally in charge of your pee and poop. Let me know if you need me.”

She never went back to diapers afterward. :)

Our son, however, is totally different! He likes us to cheer for him every time he keeps his diaper dry, likes us to help him with every aspect imaginable. (For the record, he’s the same age as your son and still hit-or-miss.) I’d say reintroduce gently when he’s 3! He’ll get it soon enough. :)
