ParticipantHello everyone, I’m from Toledo, Ohio. I’m new to working from home due to COVID-19 and I have a 2 year old girl and a 5 year old boy. I’m so thankful for this resource during this season. And as of this morning, my kids are no calling me “Mommy Teacher.” :) While this time of uncertainty is nothing like I could have ever imagined, my goal is not to just get through it, but to be intentional about stopping to reflect on what I can take from it. I’m certain I’m going to learn so much through this process.

ParticipantOur youngest had her birthday today and I sent out an ‘Activity For The Day’ challenge a few days ago to all the kids we had invited to her party before lockdown, as well as our family.
We asked them to send a birthday message, do a puppet show, make up a play, sing songs etc for our daughter and I saved them all to play after we had opened presents and eaten cake.
We got such amazing, creative videos. We watched dogs chase balls for us, we watched puppet shows, we had a mudcake cooking lesson, we received a “How to Draw a Cupcake” mini tutorial, we ended up singing along with a party around a table and I got quite tearful seeing and hearing friends as they took part with their kids.
It was a lovely way to spend almost an hour watching, it made our daughter feel special and it gave our friends’ kids a task to spend time on planning and creating at home.anonymous
ParticipantHey everyone! We are in Hailey, ID. I have a 3 year old and a under 1. we are planning on taking homeschooling year by year, but want to get started with normalizing the concept of “school” and learning. Looking forward to these activities and getting our kids excited about learning.

ParticipantYou can also do a birthday card swap. Get crafty and make birthday cards for each other.

ParticipantFor my husband’s birthday I’m going to organize a movie night with friends using a Chrome Plugin I just found called ‘Netflix Party’.

This would also be a great way for kids to connect with their friends mid-afternoon while social distancing (since they’re all watching Frozen 2 anyways, right?) or have a virtual slumber party.

ParticipantThese are awesome ideas. My daughter will also be celebrating her birthday next month so I will definitely use some of these ideas so her day still feels special.

ParticipantI Love the parade idea!
For my daughters 3rd on Friday we are having a virtual party with family on zoom. They all mailed gifts to our house and we will sing happy birthday and open them on a video chat with everyone! They are planning to decorate their houses as well for the video :) we will spend the day baking and decorating a special cake of her choice HOWEVER she wants!

ParticipantSo fun to see so many places I recognize! I’m from Canada, just outside of Vancouver…Port Coquitlam, BC so not far from Chilliwack! But I grew up just outside of Toronto in Aurora so I know of Elmvale, Barrie and have been to Windsor a handful of times.

ParticipantAww I love that idea Sarah

ParticipantI have no tips but I’m following! I live in a small suburban house with a front hall closet but no mudroom, garage or shed. Trying to figure out where to store home improvement tools, gardening supplies and outdoors clothes is a constant challenge!

ParticipantI saw someone invited local friends and family to do a parade, driving by the birthday girls’ house with signs and being able to wave and say happy birthday from the car.

ParticipantI am having a similar issue with my 3 year old daughter. It seems like she’ll just give up as soon as she starts something that she perceives as hard, and she’ll say she can’t do it. And no amount of empathy or problem solving on my part seems to help. She is just so sure that it’s impossible. I’d love to have guidance for these moments. I just want to help her through it, and I can’t seem to figure out the best method for us.

ParticipantI was an ESL teacher for a year and a half, and I had a 9year old student break down in tears because she couldn’t draw a circle perfectly. It is important for children to know that we aren’t expecting perfection from them. Yes, we want them to try hard, figure out how to solve problems by themselves, and learn to express themselves, but they also need to know that they are in a safe place where failure doesn’t mean they have lost value. I’m not saying that you haven’t do e this with your child, just saying that this is important, too.
